This is a cartoon I created using ToonDoo.com. I chose to potray the theme of different types of government to help people better understand what each type of government means. I used two wolves and a lamb as characters to exagerate the situation, where they are lost and have nothing to eat. I hope that through this toon, people can grasp the concept of different governments more easily.
Benedict, I loved your perspective on how various political systems worked in the form of the simplest of all animals - the sheep and two ravenous wolves. However, I do not think the first picture explicitly creates the image of a democratic society. Rather, you should insert another image of a prey so that it demonstrates the two wolves deciding on which animal to devour. The idea of democracy is that all citizens have equal rights to vote for the government which they believe can lead the country. In this case, you should make the wolves decide which animal could possibly fufil their hungry stomachs. Next, I do not fully comprehend the meaning of the first and second image. The second image should show one of the wolves saying, "Whose leg should I eat first?" This will probably present the idea better as it shows a wolf taking domination over the others. For the third image, I do not understand how the airplane in the backdrop and how both wolves are not allowed to eat shows the idea of freedom to exercise one's rights, which is the basis of liberty. Perhaps you could enlighten me?

Hi Benedict, I like the way you portrayed the various political systems using animals. I think that most people could understand the first one, on "Democracy". However, I felt that you had portrayed the other two systems, "Communism" and "Liberty" in a more satirical manner. For Communism, my impression of the wolf was that he was trying to be fair to the other animals yet neglecting their basic needs, as the sheep is herbivore yet it was being asked to eat a leg! Also, the wolf's attempt to be 'fair', which was the basic point of Communism, neglected the rights of 'citizens', as I'm sure neither the other wolf nor the sheep want his leg to be eaten.
ReplyDeleteFor "Liberty", the sheep was threatening the wolf, and I inferred that as you are trying to say the liberties of the people are a threat to the governments, as any attempt to control the people who knew perfectly well about their own liberty would result in retaliation from the people, who do not want their liberty controlled.
This is just my views on this comic strip, hope that I could hear your views on it.
Hello Benedict,
ReplyDeleteYour comic provides a very simplified, but precise version of Democracy, Communism and Liberalism. They are extremely easy to understand, and they re also enjoyable to read. However, I do not understand the last one. How does the wolves not eating the lamb show liberty? I should have thought it was the opposite, that the wolves had the right to et the sheep.
