Characterization: Story Excerpt

He crawled out of bed drowsily. It was 10am, a late time to wake up even for a lazy cat like himself. Pulling out his blanket, he groped for his “supplies” which he had raided from the kitchen. The next moment, it was inside his stomach. He patted his bulging stomach, tumbled over to the living room and pounced on the couch. Whipping out his “entertainment device”, the remote, he switched the television on and tuned in to his favourite channel, the food channel. After 4 hours of salivating over food, he finally got up and yawned.

Time for some real-life entertainment, he thought, and smiled. Strolling over to the kitchen table, he spotted his target, who was facing away from him. Jumping on the kitchen top, he used all his might to kick Odie off the table in one swift movement, and left the poor dog whining on the floor.

“After all that hard work I’m famished! Isn’t there any food in this house?!” He groaned. At this moment, Jon, his owner, walked in. The sight of food overwhelmed him and he pounced at the paper bags which contained his favourite lasagne. “Nooooo! GARFIELD!” Unable to defend against Garfield’s food lust, Jon fell onto the floor, with anger written all over his face. “There will be no dinner for you tonight, do you hear?!”

It did not matter; the food was gone, anyway.

  1. Your description of garfield is vivid and shows his behaviour and his physical appearance. He is depicted as a selfish sloth, consuming all the food and doing this only for himself. His craving for food is also highlighted as he keeps food beside him and watches the food channel.

  2. Your story is very nice to read and portrays Garfield the way he is in his television shows. You have clear and vivid descriptions & characteristics of Garfield shown in this story, with remarkable usage of grammar and language. The way you show Jon's reaction of Garfield destroying and wasting his food is well constructed, as well as how Garfield used all his might to kick Odie off the table, due to his immense fatigue and laziness.

  3. Hi Benedict, I enjoyed reading your vivid descriptions of his hilarious and memorable feline. You potrayed his gluttonous and evil characteristics very well, showing his obsession with food and lust for Odie through his actions. One can already picture a Garfield comic strip in the mind. Good job!
